Bible Versions

First, there isn't a right or a wrong version of the Bible to read. It is based on your preference! If you are interested in a more literal translation then you would want to use either an English Standard (ESV), New King James (NKJV), or New American Standard (NAB). If you are looking for something that is easier to read you might prefer the New International (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), Contemporary English (CEV), or The Message (MSG).

What's the difference between Bible versions?

Amplified Bible (AB) - This is based on the American Standard Bible, with additional words in brackets to help provide additional understanding.

Contemporary English Version (CEV) - This is a completely new translation and good for children and those who speak English as a second language.

English Standard Version (ESV) - This version follows the tradition of the King James, American Standard and Revised Standard Versions. It was developed by a translation team of scholars with the goal being a word for word translation that is readable.

Good News Bible (TEV) - This is also known as Today's English Version. It avoids the use of traditional biblical vocabulary but is acurate. This makes for a great Bible for youth.

Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) - This is another Bible that is a word for word translation that strives to be accurate and readable.

The Living Bible (LB) - This is a paraphrase of the American Standard Version. It is popular because it is easy to read.

The Message (MSG) - This is a paraphrase of the entire Bible. Written in today's language and very informal.

New American Bible (NAB) - This is a Catholic translation of the Bible.

New American Standard Bible (NASB) - This is translated to be literal in vocabulary and word order. This makes it harder to read but it is preferred by those who want to read a Bible that reflects the grammar of the original.

New International Version (NIV) - This is the best selling English version of the Bible. It is a combination of contemporary, literal and traditional biblical vocabulary.

New King James Version (NKJV) - This is an updated version of the vocabulary and grammar used in the King James Version.

New Jerusalem Version (NJB) - This is based on the French translation done by Roman Catholic Scholars.

New Living Translation (NLT) - This is a very readable translation but remains more true to the original text than the Living Bible.

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) - This is a readable translation removing old style wording and modified gender pronouns to be inclusive of men and women, with the exclusion of references to God.

Revised English Bible (REB) - This is a new version of the New English Bible, it offers a more conservative approach to the more difficult passages.
